The bioretention system components are intended to achieve and encourage biologic and physical processes to occur and to self perpetuate. This self perpetuation represents a significant difference between bioretention and other stormwater treatment strategies. The components are intended to blend over time with plant and root growth, organic decomposition, and the development of a macro and microorganism community. This in turn will help develop a natural soil horizon and structure that will lengthen the facilities' life span and reduce the need for maintenance other then for aesthetics. The bioretention area components have been combined to have complementary roles or functions to improve water quality and quantity control. The major components of the bioretention area make up the overall design necessary for the biological processes to occur. Click the following links for general information on the components. More specific information may be found in the Design Details pages.
